Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of access tunnels down to the site... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "They were among thousands of British troops on duty over the holidays. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our security, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
